Talent Show 2022 ...and a well overdue catch up

During 2021 and 2022 all ukulele lessons were delivered online, locations ranging from London to Japan and also to other UK counties, where some families decided to move to be closer to their grandparents and to nature. We have all gone through huge upheaval and I myself have felt the call to nature and to my own family. All students kept enjoying continuity of learning and making progress with their ukulele and musicianship skills thanks to Zoom and our shared system of feedback for practice and improvement. We continued to expand our collaborative skills through the use of the shared board, listening to each other’s materials and ideas for arrangements, evaluating approaches to our music learning and learning how to give and receive feedback for positive action and skill consolidation. Literally pretty much what our in person lessons were already like prior to the shift.

The process of being able to share in this new distant learning way has been a real lifeline for us as teachers and for every student. The friendships that were formed also grew and the sense of community within the ukulele lessons has been great. Technique tips and suggestions, but also emotional support, plus song writing, music theory, singing basics, covering existing songs with our own twist or creating mash ups, original intros and riffs and even trying out guitar, were only some of the exciting skills explored. Most students were also keen on experimenting with filming their favourite song and produce their own video to enter our end of year talent show.

We are in the process of assigning the awards this late in the year – I am writing this article at the beginning of November 2022 – because an additional major sad change happened in my own private life with the passing of my beloved friend and companion for seventeen years, my beautiful rare and precious cocker spaniel, my dearest Coco.

I then received an invitation to spend time closer to my own family and to my 93 year old disabled mother in Italy. This meant Luca and myself were able to reunite with our families and spend sometime together after the very tricky Covid period. I will write about this experience and our time in Italy in a separate article.

As the work landscape of many professionals has shifted in this last couple of years we have all had to adapt and be flexible so we have found that some students were happier to keep learning online while others favoured in person learning. We are excited to see how this continues throughout the last part of 2022 and we look forward to seeing more progress from our ukulele lessons over the course of our next year with the North London Ukulele Club and Ukulittle students.

Durante il 2021 e il 2022 tutte le lezioni di ukulele sono state tenute online, località che vanno da Londra al Giappone e anche ad altre contee del Regno Unito, dove alcune famiglie hanno deciso di trasferirsi per essere più vicine ai nonni e alla natura. Abbiamo tutti attraversato enormi sconvolgimenti e io stessa ho sentito il richiamo di avvicinarmi all natura e alla mia stessa famiglia. Tutti gli studenti hanno continuato a godere della continuità d’apprendimento e a fare progressi con i loro skill di ukulele e musicalità grazie a Zoom e al nostro sistema condiviso di feedback per la pratica e il miglioramento. Abbiamo continuato ad espandere le nostre capacità collaborative attraverso l'uso della bacheca condivisa, ascoltando i reciproci materiali e idee per gli arrangiamenti, valutando approcci al nostro apprendimento musicale e imparando come dare e ricevere feedback per azioni positive e consolidamento degli skill. Letteralmente più o meno come già erano le nostre lezioni in persona prima del cambiamento.

Il processo per poter condividere nella nuova modalità a distanza è stata una vera ancora di salvezza per noi insegnanti e per ogni studente. Anche le amicizie che si sono formate sono cresciute e il senso di comunità all'interno delle lezioni di ukulele è stato grande. Supporto e suggerimenti sulla tecnica, ma anche supporto emotivo, e poi composizione di canzoni, teoria musicale, basi del canto, cover di brani esistenti con l’aggiunta del nostro tocco personale o creare mash up, introduzioni e riff originali e persino provare la chitarra, erano solo alcune delle entusiasmanti novità esplorate. La maggior parte degli studenti e’ stata felice anche di sperimentare con le riprese della propria canzone preferita e produrre il proprio video per partecipare al nostro talent show di fine anno.

Siamo in procinto di assegnare i premi di fine d’anno e sto scrivendo questo articolo all'inizio di novembre 2022 perché ulteriori importanti cambiamenti sono avvenuti nella mia vita privata con la morte della mia amata amica e compagna per diciassette anni, la mia bellissima, rara e preziosa cocker spaniel, la mia carissima Coco. Solo recentemente sono riuscita a registrare una canzone speciale e fare un video per lei, una cover di 'Til there was you' dei Beatles. Ho poi ricevuto un invito a trascorrere del tempo più vicino alla mia famiglia e a mia madre disabile di 93 anni in Italia. Sicche’ Luca ed io siamo abbiamo potuto riunirci con le nostre famiglie e trascorrere del tempo insieme dopo i tempi molto difficili dovuti al Covid. Scriverò di questa esperienza e del nostro tempo in Italia in un articolo separato.

Poiché il panorama lavorativo di molti professionisti è cambiato negli ultimi due anni, tutti abbiamo dovuto adattarci ed essere flessibili, quindi abbiamo scoperto che alcuni studenti erano più felici di continuare ad imparare online mentre altri preferivano ritornare all'apprendimento di persona.

Siamo entusiasti di vedere come tutto continuerà nell'ultima parte del 2022 e non vediamo l'ora di vedere ulteriori progressi dalle nostre lezioni di ukulele e di chitarra nel corso del nostro prossimo anno con il North London Ukulele Club e gli studenti di Ukulittle.
